The .9% difference with UV rays

Most window films can claim that they block 99% of UV rays. UV rays are the source of energy from the sun that can damage your skin, car interiors, and home furnishings. During the summer in Central Florida we pay close attention to the UV index for the day, taking into consideration how susceptible we are to skin damage from sun exposure. But what about the rest of the year? It doesn’t have to be a hot, 90-degree day to cause sun burn. The winter and spring sun can be just as harsh to your skin without warming up your body to signal a potential sunburn. Even driving around town can add a pink hue to your skin before you realize the sun coming in your windows can be hazardous to you and your passengers.

What most people may be surprised to learn is that there are two types of UV rays, and that not all labels on products such as sunscreen, lip balm, and even window film differentiate between these two rays. The two UV rays are UV-A and UV-B. The 99% of UV rays that are blocked by traditional window films are actually UV-A rays. These are the rays that cause your interiors to fade and warp, damaging wood floors and leather upholstery. But the UV rays that cause the most skin damage are UV-B rays, and that is where the “.9%” comes into play.

While there may not seem to be a drastic leap between 99% and 99.9%, the difference can ultimately be whether or not your skin is protected while driving in your car, working at the office, or sitting down to a meal at home.
